About Us

A variety of educational methods and resources are used to meet the needs of children two and a half to five years of age. Through varied learning experiences, our curriculum encourages self-growth and confidence.  The well-trained staff understands appropriate expectations at each age level and implements a curriculum that enables each child to progress along his/her natural developmental path.  Story time, arts and crafts, games, science, cooking, free play, dramatic play, group time and activity centers are important elements of your child’s preschool experience.

Crocus Hill Preschool opened for business in 1961 with Kate Tanner as the director. The current director is Kathryn Hopkins.

Our programs are taught by professionally trained early childhood teachers.  All teachers and assistant teachers are certified by the State of Minnesota through the Department of Human Services.  Year round in-service workshops and biweekly staff meetings insure the highest quality education for your child.

Crocus Hill enrolls children from 2 ½ to 5 years of age.  We have a licensed capacity of 55 children, divided into appropriate age groups.  A child must be 2 ½ by September 1st to enroll in the youngest class (need not be toilet trained); 3 by September 1st to be in the middle class; and 4 by September 1st to be in the oldest class.  However, since children develop at different rates, class placements can be adjusted on an individual basis.

Our regular preschool classes are held Monday through Friday from 9:00 – 11:30 in the morning.  Extended day hours are from 11:30 – 4:00 pm.  Early arrival at 8:00 am is also available.

Crocus Hill teachers use positive disciplinary and behavior guidance techniques to help your children learn appropriate behavior and self-control.  Specific objectives of our behavior management guidelines are as follows.

1. To use various positive guidance methods to help children control negative behaviors.
2. To help children establish limits for their behavior.
3. To help children handle negative feelings through acceptable outlets.

Children enrolled in Crocus Hill programs are under adult supervision at all times.  A staff member is always with the children and accompanies the class to the doors where they are picked up to go home at 11:30.

A typical morning includes greeting and morning update.  Children have an opportunity for free choice, active play and large muscle activity.  We provide a state approved snack mid-morning.  Each class has age appropriate activities during structured time, along with stories, interest units, art and music.  We have various activities throughout the year which enhance our program.

Extended day, our afternoon program, is open to all Crocus Hill students and can be selected any day you like on an as needed basis.  After 11:30, care is provided in Crocus Hill school rooms by members of our staff

In order to comply with Minnesota state law, we must have the following forms on file before you child can attend school.  If you have questions in this regard, please see the Director.

1. Health Form, Immunization Record and Health Care Summary.
2. Emergency Information Cards.
3. Pre-school Orientation Interview Form.

Family orientation interviews are held following Labor Day, before classes begin.  This is an opportunity for you and your child to meet with our teachers, discuss the goals and expectations you have for your child during the coming year, and answer any questions my might have.  Your child can become familiar with his/her teachers and classroom.
